Bestsellers of 2018

2018年の日本支社売上トップ10は、順位の違いこそあれ2冊を除いて昨年と同じ顔触れで、その大部分を学部生向けのテキストが占める結果となりました。

その中で目を引いたのは、法学生のレファレンスツールとして30年以上に渡り信頼を得ている法令集のシリーズ、Blackstone’s Statute からの2タイトルです。ひとつは『Blackstone's International Law Documents, 13th edition』で、「国際連盟規約」（1919年）から国連国際法委員会による「災害時における人の保護に関する条文案」（2016年）まで、2017年3月時点の改正法を収録したもので、2018年に改訂第5版を刊行した定評のある国際法のテキスト『International Law』の著者、マルコム・エヴァンス（ブリストル大学教授）編です。もう一方は今日の国際人権法の形成にとって重要な役割を果たした「国際連盟規約」の人権関連の条款から、東アジア地域初の人権擁護の基本枠組みとなった「ASEAN人権宣言」（2012年）まで、2018年4月時点の改正を反映している『Blackstone's International Human Rights Documents, 11th edition』です。
社会科学分野ではこのほか、日本支社の売上上位の常連タイトルの『The Globalization of World Politics, 7th edition』と『Modern History of Japan, 3rd international edition』がランクインしました。前者は「国際関係学の入門書」として高い人気を誇るテキストですが、2018年には国際的な教養や教育を強く意識する高校でのご採用や、大学の一般教養の英語の授業でリーディング教材として使用されるなど、興味深い用途の広がりも伺えました。

今年のランキングで最も大きな割合を占めたのは、長年弊社のスタンダードとして確立している化学分野のテキストで、昨年とまったく同じラインナップとなっています。具体的には、日本の化学科の学生には 『アトキンス物理化学』として知られる『Atkins’ Physical Chemistry, 11th edition』、同じく 『シュライバー・アトキンス無機化学』 『ウォーレン有機化学』のブランディングで認知されている『Inorganic Chemistry, 7th edition』『Organic Chemistry, 2nd edition』（現行版の主著者は前者が Weller、後者が Claydenで、訳書はいずれも東京化学同人から刊行）、これらと逆のパターンなのが、奥山格　兵庫県立大学名誉教授　による『有機化学』（丸善出版）を英語圏に向けて紹介した形の日本発の国際標準のテキスト『Organic Chemistry: A Mechanistic Approach』です。

一般書からは、昨年から引き続き、根強い人気の日本文学短編集 『Oxford Book of Japanese Short Stories』と英国王立協会が2017年に実施した一般投票による「英国史上最も影響力のある科学書」の第1位に輝いた『Selfish Gene』40周年記念版がランクインしています。後者は、こちらの最新版に対応した訳書が2018年2月に紀伊國屋書店から出版され、翻訳も版を重ねるごとに磨かれていますので、原書との併読もお勧めです。
