Bestsellers of 2017

2017年は例年以上に日本関連書が上位にランクインしました。トップを飾った『Oxford Book of Japanese Short Stories』は、さまざまなテーマで選定されたアンソロジーのシリーズ、Oxford Books of Prose & Verse の1冊で、森鴎外の『山椒大夫』（1915年）から吉本ばななの『キムチの夢』（1992年）まで日本文学研究者・翻訳者のテッド・グーセンが選定した計35の短編小説を収録しています。手軽かつ安価なペーパーバックで20世紀の日本文学のエッセンスを楽しめるとあって、2000年の刊行以来高い人気を誇る日本支社のベストセラーです。同様にバランスよく日本史をつづった『A Modern History of Japan, 3rd edition』も定番書としてこのランキングの常連です。

社会学の観点から日本の「敗戦のトラウマ」に着目した『The Long Defeat: Cultural Trauma, Memory, and Identity in Japan』（2015年刊行）は、7月に訳書が発売されて国内主要紙で紹介されたほか、秋には著者が来日して講演会を行ったことで、多くの方に注目をしていただき、同書への関心を寄せていただくきっかけになりました。

このTOP 10においてもうひとつ注目すべきは大学の学部向けテキストの一群です。2位につけたのはこのランキングの常連で国際関係学の入門書として世界的に高い人気を誇る『The Globalization of World Politics, 7th edition』で、社会科学分野からはもう一冊、2016年末に改訂した『Global Political Economy, 5th edition』がランクインしました。自然科学では不動の定番としての評価を得ている化学教科書の存在が際立ちます。『Inorganic Chemistry, 6th edition』と『Atkins’ Physical Chemistry, 10th edition』は、2017年に東京化学同人から訳書が出版されたことで売り上げを伸ばしました。これは訳書の助けを得ながら原書にあたろうとする読者が少なくないであろうことを反映していると考えられます。『Organic Chemistry, 2nd edition』と日本人著者による『Organic Chemistry: A Mechanistic Approach』の2冊の有機化学のテキストは、昨年から引き続きTOP 10 入りしています。

これらのうち、『Atkins’ Physical Chemistry』については先日、これまでと大きく構成を変えさらに使いやすくなった改訂第11版を発売したところで、新年度から徐々にこちらへの切り替えが進むことが見込まれます。『Inorganic Chemistry』も同様に、今春改訂新版を出版予定です。

上記のどちらのカテゴリーにも属さなかったのが生物に対する見方を根底から揺るがす衝撃作としてあまりにも有名なリチャード・ドーキンスの『Selfish Gene』で、出版から40年を経た今日の視点からの考察をエピローグとして追加した40周年記念版が10位にランクインしました。
