Problems, Returns & Refunds


My order hasn’t arrived.

Typically, orders are dispatched within three business days via Sagawa Express or Yamato Transport.

To check the status of your order, log in to your My Account and click the "Orders" tab. Once your order has been shipped, the status will be updated to "Shipped."

If your order hasn’t arrived after seven business days, kindly reach out to us at shop@oupjapan.com.

For digital products (items listed as "online" in the product details), we'll send the access code to your registered email address immediately after purchase.

There is a problem with the item I received.

Contact our customer service team at shop@oupjapan.com within five business days of receiving your order. Please provide your order number along with a detailed description of the issue encountered, and we will respond with instructions on how to proceed. Please do not return the item before receiving our instructions.

What is your exchange policy?

We will offer exchanges under the following circumstances, provided that we have the replacement product available:

  1. 1. The item you received is in a defective condition upon receipt, or
  2. 2. The item you received is not what you ordered.

Please be aware that exchanges cannot be processed for reasons attributable to the customer. Additionally, depending on stock availability, we may be unable to fulfill your exchange request. In such instances, we will issue a refund instead.
Please note that certain products may not be eligible for exchange.
Please be advised that we do not accept exchanges for minor issues such as scratches, folds, damage to the packaging, presence or absence of an obi (paper band), damage to the obi, or scuff marks.

What is your return policy?

We accept returns under the following circumstances:

  1. 1. The item you received is in a defective condition upon receipt.
  2. 2. The item or quantity delivered differs from the product or quantity ordered.

In cases where we are unable to provide a replacement product, we will issue a refund for the price of the item(s) to be returned.
Please be aware that refunds cannot be processed for reasons attributable to the customer.
Please note that certain products may not be eligible for exchange.

When will I receive my refund?

The refund process commences upon the arrival of the returned merchandise at our warehouse. Typically, the refund will be credited back to the original credit card used at the time of purchase. Please be aware that the timing of the refund may vary depending on the credit card company.

How do I return or exchange an item?

Please get in touch with our customer service team at shop@oupjapan.com within five business days of receiving the product. Kindly provide your Order Number and the reason for the exchange or return. If the item qualifies for exchange or return, we will promptly reach out to you with further instructions. Please refrain from sending the product back to us until you have received our instructions.

How can I cancel my event registration?

Cancellation and refund policy varies depending on the event. Please follow the policy stated in the Commercial Policy or event details of the event you have registered for.
