OUP author wins American Philosophical Association's Book Prize

Dr. Cara Nine has been selected by the American Philosophical Association (APA) as the winner of the 2013 APA Book Prize for her title Global Justice and Territory. The APA was founded to promote the exchange of ideas among philosophers and to represent philosophy as a discipline. The prize, started in 2000, is now awarded every two years for the best book published by a younger scholar.

Updated Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary App for Japan

We would like to announce that the official Japan version of the OALD app, developed and sold by NEC Biglobe, now has added functionality which allows users to cross reference with other Biglobe dictionary apps. OUP author and former Delegate honoured in Queen's New Year list

An OUP author and former Maths Delegate was included in the Queen's New Year honours list in January. Paul Collier, author of the bestselling title The Bottom Billion, was knighted for services to promoting research and policy change in Africa. Sir Paul's book is a seminal work which received universal acclaim and many awards when it was published in 2008.

Initiated in the 1970s, these annual awards cerebrate innovation and good practice in the field of the English language and English language teaching.

'Selfie' named Word of the Year 2013

'Selfie' was named Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year 2013. Each year Oxford Dictionaries selects a word of expression that reflects the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of that particular year. 'Selfie' is defined as 'a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.' It gained momentum throughout the English-speaking world this year; research showed its frequency of use increased by 17,000 per cent in one year.

Innovative New Oxford App Shortlisted for ESU President's Award

OUP Author Wins Nobel Prize

Author of Macro Markets, Robert Shiller, a Yale University professor was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Economics for 'the empirical analysis of asset prices' along with Eugene F. Fama and Lars Peter Hansen, University of Chicago professors. Mr. Shiller is a renowned economist pioneering the field of behavioural economics, and well known for citing the risks of IT and housing bubbles. He was one of the creators of the S&P Case-Shiller Home Price Index.

Prizes for Academic Authors

The authors of The Institutional Logics Perspective: A New Approach to Culture, Structure and Process won the 2013 George R. Terry book Award, which is granted to the book published in the past two years judged to have made the most outstanding contribution to the advancement of management knowledge. Meanwhile, Chris Bickerton won the University Association of Contemporary European Studies Best Book of 2013 for European Integration . The award is for the book that has made the most substantial and original contribution to knowledge in the area of contemporary European studies.

Oxford Reading Tree in Osaka public primary schools!

The Oxford Reading Tree, a literacy textbook used in over 80% of primary schools in the UK, will be used in all 3rd to 6th grade classrooms at 19 designated public elementary schools in the city of Osaka. Oxford English Dictionary Chief Editor to Retire

John Simpson, Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), will retire later this year. John joined the editorial staff in 1976 and was appointed Chief Editor of the OED in 1993. He led the OED into the digital era, embracing changes worldwide from internet technology and added more than 60,000 new words and meanings to the dictionary. John will retire in October and as of November 1st, Michael Proffitt, the current Editorial Project Director for the OED will be appointed Chief Editor.

OUP has won an Edgar Award for The scientific Sherlock Holmes: Cracking the Case with Science and Forensics, which unpacks the science behind the successes of fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. Prizes for the History of Science and UK Politics Related Titles from Oxford University Press

We are delighted to inform that Willem Levelt, author of A History of Psycholinguistics; the Pre-Chomskyan Era, has won the American Philosophical Society's Patrick Suppes Prize for the History of Science. His book explores the history of research on brain and languages. Also, Tim Bale has won the Conservatives and Conservatism Specialist Group prize for The Conservatives since 1945: The Drivers of Party Change, which provides a well-rounded view of the party's history spanning more than half a century.

OUP author Serge Haroche was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2012. He is a renowned French physicist, a professor at the College de France and co-authored Exploring the Quantum: Atoms, Cavities, and Photons published by OUP in 2006.
