We often hear that people remember 20% of what they hear and 70% of what they say and write, but is this true? In this session, after reviewing the benefits of cross-curricular classes for the primary EFL classroom, we will look at the importance of active learning. Using material from Oxford Read and Discover, participants will have a chance to experience the difference between learning information through lecture and learning through activities. Finally, we will assess whether the lecture-based approach or active learning is more effective.

One of the most difficult aspects of teaching is setting realistic goals. This workshop will explore some of the common challenges that teachers face in trying to balance expectations vs. outcomes. After discussing strategies for effectively using the time and materials provided to achieve the best possible outcomes, Daryl will show how incremental long-term growth and skill development should be prioritized over short-term expectations. Practical examples will be provided of how the presenter has achieved this, with a focus on the transition period from phonics based programs to intensive 4 skills programs in later years.
