Bestsellers of 2016

2016年も売上上位タイトル*には人気のテキストが数多くランクインしました。人文・社会科学系では、このランキングの常連で、12月に改訂第7版を刊行した『The Globalization of World Politics』や、教科書としてだけではなく、英語で読める日本近現代史として広く親しまれる『A Modern History of Japan: From Tokugawa Times to the Present, 3rd International Edition』が総合ランキングに入りました。自然科学系でも『Organic Chemistry, 2nd edition』、『Inorganic Chemistry, 6th edition』、『Atkins’ Physical Chemistry, 10th edition』、『Principles of Development, 5th edition』のように訳書があるもの、また日本の教科書をもとに国際市場向けの改変・英語化を施した『Organic Chemistry: A Mechanistic Approach』など、日本語版との何等かの互換性が望めるタイトルがランキング上位を占めているのが印象的です。

テキスト以外では、装丁別に集計しているため今回の総合ランキングから漏れてしまった日本論の『Japan and the Shackles of the Past』は合算すると今年も引き続き総合8位の販売部数を維持しています。このほか人工知能（AI）が飛躍的に知的になりその脅威が盛んに論じられる中で気鋭の哲学者ニック・ボストロム（オックスフォード大学教授）による『Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies』と、進化生物学の古典的名著とされ、昨年刊行40周年を迎えた『Selfish Gene, 40th Anniversary edition』が自然科学分野ランキングに入った点について特筆しておきたいと思います。
